Several people were killed after a single-engine plane crashed at Wright Brothers National Memorial's First Flight Airport, the National Park Service reported. The crash occurred on Saturday afternoon in a wooded area as the plane was attempting to land, according to eyewitnesses. The crash, which happened around 5 p.m., caused the airplane to catch fire. Firefighters from the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department, along with other local teams, quickly extinguished the blaze.

Due to the incident, the airport has been closed indefinitely, and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation, with the Federal Aviation Administration also notified. The Wright Brothers National Memorial will remain closed on Sunday as a result of the tragedy.

While the exact number of fatalities has not been officially confirmed, authorities are continuing to gather details about the victims.

This accident follows another aviation incident on September 19 in South Carolina, where a flight was forced to turn back after a door fell off mid-flight. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in that case.
