Shri Krishna Janmashtami, all you need to know about 'muhurt', 'prasadam'
Every year, the grand festival of Shri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami tithi of the Bhadrapada month. This year, Janmashtami will be observed on Monday, August 26. According to astrological calculations, Lord Krishna was born under the Taurus ascendant, Taurus sign, and Rohini nakshatra. Worshipping Lord Krishna on this day is believed to grant blessings for progeny, longevity, and prosperity. Devotees often observe a fast, refrain from food and water, and perform detailed rituals during the night. It is said that observing Janmashtami can fulfill all wishes. Here’s a guide on the worship procedure and auspicious timings for Janmashtami.
Lord Krishna was born under the Taurus ascendant and Taurus sign, so the celebrations are held during this time. This year, the Ashtami tithi will begin on August 26 at 3:39 AM and conclude on August 27 at 2:19 AM. Thus, the Ashtami tithi will be present during the night of August 26. The auspicious time for worshipping Krishna will be from midnight 12:00 to 12:44 AM, during which Lord Krishna’s birth will be celebrated.
On Janmashtami, start by bathing and taking a vow for fasting or worship. Consume only light food or fruits throughout the day and maintain a sattvic diet. At midnight, place a metal idol of Lord Krishna in a container. Bathe the idol with a mixture of milk, curd, honey, sugar, and ghee, known as Panchamrit. Afterward, bathe the idol with water, ensuring that offerings are made using a conch shell. Then, offer yellow cloth, flowers, and prasad to the deity. Place the idol in a swing and gently rock it, expressing your wishes and prayers. Lord Krishna is believed to remove obstacles and grant blessings.
Special offerings such as coriander panjiri, butter and sugar, sweets with tulsi leaves, makhana paag, charanamrit, and fruit kheer are prepared and distributed as prasad on Janmashtami.
Chanting the name of Lord Krishna is a powerful mantra. You may also recite the "Hare Krishna" mantra. For love and joy, read the "Madhurashtaka."
