Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Criticizes Divisive Slogans, Calls Them a Threat to Democracy

Shankaracharya

During his visit to Raipur, Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand voiced strong objections to slogans like "Ek Hai to Safe Hai, Bantege to Katoge" (United, we are safe; divided, we will perish). He condemned such statements, describing them as dangerous to the democratic fabric of the nation.

Divisive Slogans Threaten Democratic Values

Shankaracharya termed the slogan a veiled threat to voters, stating that using such rhetoric undermines free and fair elections.

"Threatening people to vote a certain way is a direct attack on the electoral process. It is a threat to democracy," he said. He urged institutions like the Election Commission, the President, and the Supreme Court to intervene and address the issue.

On Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi’s Sambhal Visit

The Shankaracharya also commented on Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi’s visit to Sambhal, criticizing it as a mere political spectacle. "Leaders visiting such places won’t solve the actual issues.

Whether the site housed a temple or mosque earlier is something for the Hindu and Muslim communities to resolve together or let the judiciary decide," he remarked. He added that political visits and symbolic gestures, such as stone-pelting, do little to resolve long-standing disputes.

Reaction to Baba Bageshwar’s Call for a Hindu Nation

The Shankaracharya also responded to Baba Bageshwar’s remarks on establishing a Hindu nation and his efforts to eradicate caste discrimination.

"Caste and varna are integral to Hindu identity. Attempting to eliminate them could lead to an increase in religious conversions," he warned. He further emphasized the importance of preserving traditional symbols of Hindu identity, including saffron attire and the varna system, and reiterated that Hinduism has survived countless challenges throughout history.

A Call for Constructive Dialogue

The Shankaracharya stressed the need for dialogue and peaceful resolutions over divisive rhetoric. He concluded by urging political and religious leaders to prioritize unity and refrain from actions that could harm communal harmony or democratic values.
