'Secular Civil Code' goes viral in Indian social media, after PM Modi's I-Day speech

Secular Civil Code

In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly advocated for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), emphasizing that laws that create divisions within the country have no place in a modern society. He argued that the current civil code is seen by many as discriminatory and communal, and that the Supreme Court has repeatedly called for the adoption of a uniform code that aligns with the principles of equality outlined in the Constitution.

From the Red Fort, the Prime Minister stated, "The Supreme Court has frequently discussed the need for a Uniform Civil Code, issuing orders because a significant portion of the population feels, justifiably so, that our current civil code is discriminatory. Our Constitution and the vision of its framers compel us to fulfill this promise."

He called for inclusive discussions on the matter, urging all citizens to participate in shaping a secular civil code that would eliminate religious discrimination. He noted that several BJP-led state governments have already begun steps toward implementing such a code and indicated that his government is committed to addressing this issue at a national level during its current term.

In his speech, the Prime Minister also expressed concern over the rising incidents of violence against women, calling on state governments to take these issues seriously. His remarks came amidst widespread protests in West Bengal following a tragic incident in Kolkata. This marked his 11th consecutive Independence Day address, where he reiterated the BJP’s long-standing goal of establishing a Uniform Civil Code, reframing it as a means to ensure equal treatment under the law for all citizens.
