Salt is a fundamental ingredient that enhances flavor but also stirs debate due to its health implications. While it undoubtedly improves the taste of food, it is often linked to various health risks. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1.89 million deaths occur each year as a result of excessive salt consumption, leading to conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease. So, how much salt is too much? This remains a pressing concern.

Sodium, a key component of table salt, is crucial for maintaining cellular functions and is naturally present in numerous foods such as milk, meat, and shellfish. However, excessive sodium intake can elevate the risk of heart disease, stroke, and premature mortality, as noted in a WHO report.

Harvard Medical School further emphasizes that high sodium consumption is a primary contributor to elevated blood pressure, which heightens the likelihood of developing heart failure and exacerbates complications for those already experiencing heart issues.

The WHO advises that adults limit their sodium intake to less than 2000 mg per day, roughly equivalent to just under a teaspoon. For children, the appropriate amount can be tailored to their energy needs. Additionally, the WHO recommends using iodized salt, which is crucial for healthy brain development.

While completely eliminating salt from your diet is impractical due to its impact on flavor, the WHO suggests focusing on fresh, minimally processed foods and monitoring the amount of salt added during cooking. It’s also advisable to avoid serving salt on the side.

Excessive sodium intake is a significant risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and early death, according to WHO findings.
