Sahastratal track tragedy, 13 trekkers rescued, nine bodies recovered

Uttarakhand Police has confirmed that rescue operation to search for the trekkers trapped on Sahastratal track has been completed.

“In this operation, 13 trekkers were rescued safely yesterday…The number of trackers who died in the accident has reached 9. 8 trackers who were rescued safely have been sent to Dehradun. 5 others are being sent to Dehradun today. All the 9 bodies recovered from the spot will be brought to the District Hospital Uttarkashi for postmortem and then sent to Dehradun by Air Force helicopter”, says Uttarakhand police.

Earlier, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami had expressed grief on death of 9 trekkers in an accident caused by bad weather on Sahastratal track.

“….The administration has rescued 13 trekkers safely by conducting a rescue operation and the ongoing operation is being conducted with the help of SDRF, district administration and Air Force to save other people. I pray to God to give peace to the departed souls and strength to the bereaved families to bear this immense loss and for the speedy and safe release of the trapped trekkers”, he had said.

It emerged that 13 trekkers, part of a 22-member group, have been rescued by the IAF, NDRF, and SDRF. The 9 members of the trekking expedition died. These trekkers were stuck in fog and snowfall. About 13 trekkers were rescued by helicopters. Sahastratal is situated at an altitude of about 14500 feet.
