Explosions echoed through central Kyiv during rush hour on Monday morning as Ukraine's military issued a warning about a significant Russian missile and drone assault. This came after multiple waves of drone attacks earlier in the day. The Ukrainian air force alerted citizens that 11 Russian TU-95 strategic bombers were airborne and confirmed the launch of several missiles. Reuters reporters outside Kyiv heard air defense systems engaging incoming targets.

In the northwestern city of Lutsk, local authorities reported explosions that damaged an apartment block, with potential casualties still being assessed. The Polish armed forces' Operational Command noted that Polish and allied aircraft had been mobilized in response to Russia's attack, which also targeted regions in western Ukraine near the Polish border.

The heightened risk of a major Russian missile strike had been anticipated by Ukrainians for some time, with the U.S. embassy issuing a warning last week ahead of Ukrainian Independence Day, which was observed on Saturday.

In retaliation, Ukraine has intensified its long-range drone attacks on Russian territory. Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, stated on Telegram that Russia's attempts to destroy Ukraine's energy infrastructure would result in heavy costs for Russian infrastructure.

Earlier on Monday, Ukraine's military reported two waves of Russian drone attacks, which initially caused no damage or casualties. Around 10 drones were intercepted and destroyed as they approached Kyiv around 0230 GMT, according to Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's military administration.

Power and water supplies were disrupted in parts of Kyiv following the attacks, and emergency power outages were implemented by Ukraine’s largest private energy producer, DTEK. Air raid alerts were issued across the country in response to the missile and drone threat, with regional authorities confirming at least three fatalities in the western Lutsk, eastern Dnipro, and southern Zaporizhzhia regions.
