The Rajya Sabha, with 245 seats, has seen the NDA reach a majority after the unopposed election of nine BJP members and two allies.

The Rajya Sabha, with a total of 245 seats, currently has eight vacancies—four from Jammu and Kashmir and four nominated. With the house's present strength at 237, the majority mark stands at 119.

On Tuesday, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a significant milestone by reaching the majority mark in the Rajya Sabha. This was accomplished following the unopposed election of nine BJP members and two allies in the by-polls for the upper house. As a result, the BJP's numbers have risen to 96, boosting the NDA's strength to 121.

The BJP's newly elected members include Ranjan Das and Rameshwar Teli from Assam, Manan Kumar Mishra from Bihar, Kiran Choudhary from Haryana, Union Minister George Kurian from Madhya Pradesh, Dhairyasheel Patil from Maharashtra, Mamata Mohanta from Odisha, Ravneet Singh Bittu from Rajasthan, and Rajeev Bhattacharjee from Tripura.

Additionally, Congress's Abhishek Manu Singhvi was elected from Telangana, raising the Opposition's INDIA bloc to 85 seats. Among the NDA allies, Nitin Patil from the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP and Upendra Kushwaha from the Rashtriya Lok Morcha were also elected unopposed.

The NDA’s new majority position, which it has been striving for a decade, is expected to streamline the passage of contentious bills in the Rajya Sabha. Previously, the large Opposition numbers had often stalled significant government legislation. However, with parties like the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and YSR Congress losing power, the NDA's reliance on non-aligned parties for support will be reduced.

The Congress will retain the Leader of the Opposition role in the Rajya Sabha with its strength now at 27 members, surpassing the required 25 seats for this position.
