The parents of the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last month participated in a protest with junior doctors at the hospital on Wednesday night. The family claims that the police attempted to suppress the case by hastily cremating their daughter's body. They also allege that Kolkata Police tried to bribe them during the process.

The tragic incident occurred on August 9 when the victim's body was discovered in a semi-naked state in the seminar hall of the hospital. Following the discovery, the police arrested the main suspect, Sanjay Roy, whose presence was captured by CCTV footage and whose Bluetooth headphones were found near the crime scene.

The victim's parents have criticized the police for their handling of the case, alleging that they were pressured to cremate the body against their wishes. According to the family, around 300-400 police officers surrounded them, creating an environment that forced them to proceed with the cremation. They claim that the cremation was rushed and that they were not charged for the service.

The father of the victim reported that a senior police officer offered them money while the body was still at their home. He also accused police officers of attempting to get him to sign blank documents, which he refused to do.

The mother of the victim expressed her frustration and support for the protesting doctors, stating that she cannot sleep and that the protests should continue until justice is served. She also questioned why the hospital authorities prematurely labeled the death as suicide and why there were delays in the autopsy and filing of the FIR.

The case has drawn scrutiny from both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court, particularly regarding the delay in filing the FIR and the lack of a police complaint from the hospital. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has questioned the delay, asking why the FIR was registered nearly 14 hours after the body was discovered.

The victim's aunt also criticized the police for their conduct, accusing them of being present only until the last rites were completed and then becoming inactive. She expressed disappointment at the police’s attempt to bribe the grieving family, questioning their humanity and responsibility in handling the case.
