Retired police officer shoots at son-in-law, over longrunning family dispute
Chaos erupted at the Chandigarh District Court when a retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab Police fatally shot his IRS son-in-law. The police promptly arrested the accused following the incident and have commenced an investigation.
It is reported that both families had been embroiled in a domestic dispute for a long time. On August 3rd, both parties were present at the Chandigarh Family Court to address this issue, where the accused father-in-law carried out the crime.
According to media reports, retired Punjab Police AIG Malvinder S. Sidhu shot and killed his son-in-law, Harpreet Singh, in court. Harpreet Singh was an officer in the Agriculture Department. Media sources indicate that the families had been in conflict for some time, with Harpreet and his wife undergoing divorce proceedings. Both sides were present in the Family Court for a hearing when the incident occurred. The police quickly arrested the accused and registered a case to proceed with further action.
The incident unfolded when Malvinder Singh Sidhu, present at the mediation center in the Chandigarh District Court regarding his daughter's divorce, shot Harpreet Singh. Harpreet had a long-standing dispute with his wife, who is currently abroad. Sidhu attended the hearing on her behalf. Upon Harpreet's arrival at the mediation center, Sidhu excused himself to use the bathroom and asked Harpreet to accompany him. As they exited the mediation room, Sidhu opened fire, hitting Harpreet in the leg and abdomen. Court staff apprehended Sidhu and confined him to a room. Harpreet succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. The police have arrested Malvinder Singh Sidhu and recovered the .32 bore pistol used in the crime.
Sidhu has a history of controversies. In October 2023, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau filed a case against him and two associates for extortion, fraud, and bribery. Sidhu was arrested by Mohali police on October 25, 2023. During interrogation, he clashed with Vigilance officers and assaulted DSP Varinder Singh, who subsequently lodged a complaint against him.
