Rajasthan: 6-Million-Year-Old Water Emerges During Borewell Digging in Jaisalmer, Experts Reveal

Jaisalmer, Rajasthan: A borewell excavation in the Mohangarh region of Jaisalmer district has led to the discovery of water that experts believe could be approximately 6 million years old. The revelation, based on geological evidence, has sparked both scientific curiosity and local concern.
The incident began on the morning of December 28 when a borewell was being dug on the farmland of BJP Nagar Mandal President Vikram Singh. At a depth of approximately 850 feet, water gushed out with immense pressure, accompanied by gas emissions. The water spouted up to 10 feet high, creating a scene that startled locals. The water flow, which resembled a river, continued unabated for three days before ceasing on Monday.
Experts Examine the Site
A team of specialists, including senior hydrogeologist Dr. Narayan Inkhia from the State Ground Water Board, representatives from the Central Ground Water Board, and IIT Jodhpur researchers, visited the site to assess the situation. The experts observed sand from the Tertiary period being expelled with the water, suggesting that the water could date back millions of years.
“This water could be from the Tertiary period, making it potentially around 6 million years old. This warrants a detailed study and may require drilling additional wells to better understand the geological phenomenon,” said Dr. Inkhia.
Safety Measures in Place
The unexpected water surge and gas emissions had initially caused alarm among local residents. While the flow has since stopped, experts have warned that it could resume unpredictably and might release harmful substances such as toxic gases.
In response, the district administration has imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Defense Code. Residents have been advised to maintain a distance of at least 500 meters from the excavation site.
Efforts to Secure the Area
Authorities have sought technical assistance from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to ensure safety and prevent further water or gas eruptions. Equipment and machinery trapped during the initial borewell incident are also being removed under expert supervision.
A Geological Marvel
The discovery of ancient water has drawn significant interest from geologists and hydrologists, who view this as a rare and valuable opportunity to study deep groundwater reserves and the region’s geological history.
Timeline of Events
December 28, 10 AM: Borewell excavation begins; water and gas erupt from 850 feet below ground.
December 29-31: Continuous water flow observed; locals report river-like conditions in the field.
January 1: Flow ceases; experts conduct site inspections and recommend further studies.
Future Implications
The incident highlights the potential risks and rewards of deep borewell projects in geologically sensitive regions. While the discovery of ancient water is a scientific milestone, ensuring public safety remains a top priority for authorities.
This remarkable occurrence underscores the need for careful exploration and research to unlock the secrets buried deep within the earth’s layers.
