Garbage Truck

Garbage truck drivers in Raipur Municipal Corporation, along with their counterparts in other urban bodies across the state, began an indefinite strike today, demanding the abolition of the contract system, direct salary payments, and a ₹4,000 labor honorarium.

Impact of the Strike

Sanitation and water supply services have come to a standstill in 70 wards of Raipur. Approximately 400 drivers in Raipur and over 20,000 employees across the state are participating in the strike.

Protest Details

Instead of reporting to work, the drivers drove their vehicles to Tikrapara Police Station, marking the start of their protest. The workers have vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met, significantly affecting the city's waste collection and water supply.

Key Demands

End to Contractual Employment: Employees demand the cessation of the contractor-based employment system.

Direct Salary Payments: Workers want salaries to be paid directly by the municipal corporation. ₹4,000 Honorarium: A labor recognition bonus for all sanitation workers.

City in Crisis

The strike has caused disruptions in daily services, leaving garbage uncollected and impacting the city's cleanliness. With no immediate resolution in sight, residents are bracing for further inconveniences.

Workers' Stand

Protesters assert that they will not return to work until their demands are addressed. A representative said, “We have been working under harsh conditions and deserve fair treatment. Ending the contract system and receiving direct wages are our basic rights.” This strike highlights the growing discontent among municipal employees, putting pressure on authorities to resolve the issue and restore essential services.
