Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar may have quit party, speculations doing rounds amid lack of clarification

Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar's resignation rumors surface ahead of the October 15 panchayat elections, citing dissatisfaction with party direction and reduced political involvement.

Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar has reportedly resigned ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections on October 15, although there has been no official confirmation regarding this development. Jakhar has not been responding to calls, and his personal assistant, Sanjeev Trika, stated to The Indian Express that "there is nothing like this," insisting that Jakhar has merely been busy and less active recently.

However, sources within the BJP high command have confirmed that Jakhar has expressed his reluctance to continue in his role as state party president, citing difficulties in working freely in the state. Since the Lok Sabha elections, Jakhar has noticeably reduced his involvement in state politics, with his last public appearance on September 3 at a BJP state meeting in Chandigarh, which marked the beginning of the party’s membership drive.

Jakhar previously resigned from the Congress in May 2022, where he had served as state president, and joined the BJP later that month. He was appointed as the BJP’s Punjab president on July 4, 2022.

Discontent has been brewing within the Punjab BJP, with long-standing members reportedly dissatisfied with the influx of former Congress leaders into the party and their subsequent appointments to key positions.

"We will not allow Congressism to infiltrate the BJP," stated a senior BJP leader. Speculation has also arisen regarding strained relations between Jakhar and Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, as well as BJP leader Rana Sodhi, both of whom were previously in the Congress with Jakhar. Jakhar's absence from a recent BJP state body meeting in Chandigarh, focused on the membership drive, has only fueled rumors about his resignation.

Amidst this backdrop, it has been reported that Sunil Jakhar intends to resign from his position as Punjab BJP president due to his dissatisfaction with the high command's strategy for the state. His unhappiness has reportedly stemmed from the elevation of Ravneet Singh Bittu to Union Minister, even after Bittu's defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, as well as his concerns regarding the overall direction taken by the BJP in Punjab. While Jakhar met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi a week ago to voice his displeasure, he has yet to formalize his resignation. This development comes just before the Punjab Panchayat elections scheduled for October 15, potentially leaving a significant void in the party's leadership.
