Protests gone Wrong, Watch as protestors struggle to douse raging fire

Protests Against Burning of Union Carbide Waste in Pithampur Turn Violent, Two Critically Injured
The controversy over the burning of 337 metric tons of toxic waste from the Bhopal Gas Tragedy at Pithampur Industrial Area in Dhar district has intensified.
On Friday, thousands of protesters gathered in Pithampur to oppose the proposed incineration, expressing fears of severe environmental and health consequences.
Protests Take a Dangerous Turn
During the demonstrations, two young men poured petrol on themselves as an act of protest. However, someone from the crowd allegedly lit the fire, resulting in critical injuries to both individuals.
Their condition is reported to be serious.
On Thursday, another protester attempted self-immolation but was saved in time. The growing unrest reflects the deep concerns of the local population regarding the potential dangers of incinerating toxic waste in their area.
Police Action and Official Appeals
To disperse the crowd, police resorted to lathi-charge, further escalating tensions. In response to the volatile situation, Pithampur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vivek Gurjar appealed for calm and urged protesters to maintain peace.
Fears Rooted in Bhopal Gas Tragedy
The toxic waste originates from the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, one of the world’s worst industrial disasters. The protesters fear that burning this hazardous material in Pithampur could lead to adverse health effects and environmental contamination, similar to the devastation caused by the gas leak decades ago.
The incident underscores the urgent need for effective communication and resolution between authorities and residents to address safety concerns and prevent further escalation.
