In a major announcement, President's Medal for Gallantry has been awarded to the members of STF team that killed gangster Atiq Ahmed's son Asad and shooter Mohammad Ghulam in an encounter on 13 April 2023 in Jhansi.

Police personnel involved in the operation that led to the death of gangster Atiq Ahmed's son, Asad, have been honored with the President's Gallantry Medal. Reports indicate that six members of the STF team who were involved in the encounter in Jhansi on April 13, 2023, where Asad and Mohammad Ghulam were killed, received this prestigious award. In total, 17 members of the UP Police have been recognized with the President's Gallantry Medal. The team led by Navendu Singh and Vimal Kumar Singh, who spearheaded the operation against Asad, were specifically acknowledged for their bravery. Asad Ahmed and Mohammad Ghulam, both wanted in connection with the murder of Umesh Pal, were killed in a shootout with the Uttar Pradesh Police near Jhansi. Asad, who was captured on CCTV during Umesh Pal's killing, had been on the run for approximately 50 days. Police reported that Asad and Ghulam, each with a reward of Rs 5 lakh on their heads, attempted to escape on a motorcycle and fired at the STF team when they were surrounded. The ensuing gunfight resulted in their deaths. Following the brazen killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness in a 2005 BSP MLA murder case, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accused the Samajwadi Party of supporting criminal elements and vowed to eradicate them. In a separate incident last week, Atiq Ahmed, a former MP, and Ashraf, a former MLA, were shot dead by three youths who chanted religious slogans during the attack. The attackers later surrendered to the police.
