Powerful earthquake rocks Taiwan east coast, no immediate reports of damage

Taiwan

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck 34 km (21 miles) off the eastern coast of Taiwan near Hualien on Friday, according to the island's weather administration. This was the second significant tremor within 24 hours, following a 5.7 magnitude quake in the northeastern region on Thursday. Although the quake shook buildings in Taipei, no immediate reports of damage have been confirmed. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 9.7 km and briefly affected subway services in the capital. Taiwan, located near tectonic plate boundaries, is highly prone to seismic activity and has a history of devastating earthquakes.
