Political Storm Over OBC Reservation: Former CM Bhupesh Baghel Accuses BJP Government of "Great Injustice"

The reservation of the district panchayat president positions has sparked a political storm in Chhattisgarh. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has launched a scathing attack on the state government over the issue.

Following the completion of the reservation process for the president's positions in all 33 district panchayats, the reservation list has ignited heated political debates. Bhupesh Baghel criticized the state government, calling it a "great injustice" to the OBC (Other Backward Classes) community, which constitutes nearly 50% of the state's population.

He pointed out that none of the 33 district panchayat president positions were reserved for OBCs. Of the 33 districts, 16 were reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) and 5 for Scheduled Castes (SC), with the remaining 13 going to the general category.

Baghel claimed that this outcome reflected the BJP government's disregard for the OBC community. In a post on social media, Baghel stated, "As I had anticipated, there is not a single district where a president's position has been reserved for OBCs. In a state where almost 50% of the population belongs to the OBC category, denying them reservations reflects the BJP’s approach."

He further demanded that the list be canceled and a revised list be issued. Baghel also accused the BJP-led government of deliberately reducing OBC reservations. He alleged that changes in the reservation system were made in a calculated manner, resulting in the removal of OBC reserved seats in the majority of district and janpad panchayats across the state.

"Earlier, 25% of the seats in 16 district panchayats and 85 janpad panchayats were reserved for OBCs, but now most of these seats have been eliminated," Baghel added during a press conference. Particularly in the Bastar and Surguja regions, OBC communities have suffered significant losses, according to Baghel.

He also pointed out that in areas with high OBC populations, ranging from 90% to 99%, no reservation was provided for the position of sarpanch. Furthermore, Baghel criticized the decision to declare reserved OBC seats as general category seats in Scheduled districts and blocks.

He expressed concern that these changes would have a detrimental impact on the OBC community in Bastar, Surguja, and other districts. Baghel concluded by accusing the BJP government of committing "great injustice" to the state's OBC population, warning that this move could negatively affect the party in the upcoming elections.
