Police nabs man for duping dozens of women on matrimonial sites, apps
Bhubaneswar Police have arrested 34-year-old Satyajit Managobind Samal, accused of swindling several women through matrimonial sites and apps. The arrest was made after the police used one of their officers to set a trap.
For over two years, Samal allegedly used matrimonial sites and apps to find women, coax them into relationships, and then swindle them out of large sums of money. On Friday, he was apprehended by the police.
Samal, from Jajpur, was arrested in an upscale area of Bhubaneswar. A senior female police officer posed as a potential victim to help corner him. The arrest followed complaints from two women.
Samal would allegedly introduce himself as a police officer or an Intelligence Bureau officer on matrimonial sites, seeking prospective matches. After gaining their trust, he would ask for large amounts of cash for a new business, and if they demanded repayment, he would blackmail and threaten them.
Police discovered that Samal had marriage agreements with at least four women, including the two who filed complaints. Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda confirmed that Samal was in contact with at least 49 women through the matrimonial app and targeted mainly divorced women.
In Bhubaneswar, Samal managed to marry five women and was in contact with around 50 others. After two women complained, the police set up a trap and arrested him. He would pretend to be a police officer, blackmail women after marriage, and extort large sums of money. The police recovered a car, a bike, Rs 2.10 lakh, a pistol, and marriage contracts from him.
Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner Sanjeev Panda stated that the police team, led by a female officer, successfully arrested Samal after receiving complaints from two women. During questioning, Samal admitted to marrying the two women. Among his five wives, two are from Odisha, and one each is from Kolkata and Delhi.
Samal allegedly used the money to buy cars and lease them to taxi services, supporting a lavish lifestyle, and frequently flying to Dubai, according to the police.
Bhubaneshwar DCP Prateek Singh informed, "A man named Satyajit Samal has been arrested. He used to contact women on matrimonial sites. He especially used to target divorced women by assuring them to stay with them forever. He even married a few of them...".
