PM Modi likely to visit Poland-Ukraine, in August
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Poland and Ukraine from August 21 to 23, with a focus on fostering dialogue and diplomacy amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. This trip marks Modi's first visit to Warsaw in over forty years, despite Poland being India's largest trading and investment partner in central and eastern Europe.
The visit will emphasize technology collaboration, particularly in the food processing sector, where Poland is renowned for its advanced technologies. Modi's itinerary includes a brief visit to Kyiv, following his visit to Russia and Austria just over a month ago.
In Warsaw, Modi is expected to discuss technology partnerships, with a focus on integrating Polish expertise into India's food processing initiatives. Poland's capabilities in this sector are well-regarded, and both countries have established a joint working group on food processing. Polish firms may also play a role in India's mega food parks.
Additionally, Poland's clean coal technologies and its involvement in the development of India's mining and power sectors will be highlighted. Indian engineers have received training in Polish mines specializing in intelligent mining, and a bilateral agreement signed in 2019 aims to enhance cooperation in the coal and mining industries.
Indian investment in Poland has grown steadily, now exceeding $3 billion. Indian companies, particularly in the IT sector, have created significant employment opportunities in Poland, with an estimated 10,000 Polish nationals employed by Indian IT firms.
Poland has a rich tradition of Indology, with Polish scholars translating Sanskrit works since the 19th century. The Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the University of Warsaw's Oriental Institute are prominent centers for Indian studies in central Europe.
