PM Modi embarks on visit to Poland, Ukraine, all eyes on Modi Zelensky meet
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin his two-nation visit on August 21, traveling to Poland and Ukraine. This trip marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to these countries in decades.
Modi's visit to Poland is significant as it is the first by an Indian Prime Minister since Morarji Desai's trip in 1979. The year 2024 celebrates the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Poland. During his stay from August 21 to 22, Modi will meet Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, President Andrzej Duda, and members of the Indian community. He will receive a ceremonial welcome in Warsaw and interact with business leaders and ecologists. The Polish government and people have been supportive, notably assisting in the evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine during the conflict in 2022.
Following his visit to Poland, Modi will travel to Kyiv, Ukraine on August 23, making this the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992. Modi will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss various aspects of India-Ukraine relations, including agriculture, infrastructure, health, education, and defense. Modi’s visit comes amid a new military offensive by Kyiv into Russian territory and follows his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Prime Minister will travel to Kyiv by train, a journey of approximately 10 hours each way. This trip is seen as a significant gesture in reinforcing India's diplomatic and strategic ties with both Poland and Ukraine, reflecting India's independent foreign policy stance amid ongoing global conflicts.
