Plane crash east of Portland, houses damaged, three dead, watch here
Three people have died following a tragic small plane crash into a row of townhouses east of Portland on Saturday morning, which ignited a fire that destroyed several homes, authorities reported to KATU-TV.
Initially, officials reported that the plane was carrying two passengers, and at least one resident was still unaccounted for. Dramatic images and videos from KGW-TV in Portland captured one of the townhomes fully engulfed in flames, with black smoke billowing from adjacent properties. Gresham Fire Chief Scott Lewis stated that the blaze spread to at least four homes, displacing up to six families. Two individuals received treatment at the scene, though their injuries' specifics were not disclosed.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has identified the downed aircraft as a twin-engine Cessna 421C, which crashed around 10:30 a.m. near Troutdale Airport, located about 30 minutes east of Portland.
During the crash, the plane struck a pole and power lines, triggering a separate brush fire in a nearby field, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office. The plane broke into multiple pieces as it came down in the residential area of Fairview, a city with a population of around 10,000.
Fire Chief Lewis mentioned that the first alert came from the Troutdale Airport control tower, which spotted a thick plume of smoke. There were no emergency calls or distress signals from the aircraft prior to the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the incident. Two NTSB investigators have been dispatched to the crash site to document the wreckage, according to spokesperson Peter Knudson. Additional details about the crash have not been released.
Troutdale Airport, managed by the Port of Portland, is known for flight training and recreational aviation.
