Pilot dies as plane crashes into sea, during air show, watch here
On Friday, a small aerobatic plane crashed into the sea during an airshow off the coast of southeast France, with the pilot unable to escape, according to officials. The incident occurred when the Fouga Magister aircraft, which was performing at Le Lavandou, went down just before a demonstration by the French Air Force's elite aerobatic team.
The Fouga Magister, a post-World War II trainer and aerobatic jet used by the French military for many years, lacks an ejection seat. Rescue teams swiftly located the body of the 65-year-old pilot, as confirmed by the prefecture and other officials.
The airshow was subsequently canceled due to the tragic circumstances.
This incident follows a separate accident earlier in the week, where two French pilots were killed when two Rafale fighter jets collided in mid-air in eastern France. A third pilot ejected safely from the crash over Colombey-les-Belles, a town in northeastern France.
