Parliamentarian steps down, quits politics, writes letter to CM Mamata Banerjee

TMC MP Jawhar Sircar resigns from the Rajya Sabha, citing governance issues and corruption in the party in a letter addressed to Mamata Banerjee amidst protests over the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder incident.

CM Mamata Banerjee

Amid unceasing protests over RG Kar rape and murder episode, Trinamool MP Jawahar Sircar has quit his Rajya Sabha post. He wrote to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee about “unchecked overbearing attitude of the favoured few and the corrupt" in the party.

TMC MP Jawhar Sircar resigned from the Rajya Sabha and announced his exit from politics in a letter addressed to Mamata Banerjee, citing disillusionment with his party's governance and corruption issues. He expressed gratitude to the Trinamool Congress for giving him the opportunity to represent the state and understand national politics over the past three years but criticized the party's lack of action against corruption. Sircar, who entered politics at the age of 69/70 to challenge the "autocratic and communal politics" of the BJP, expressed frustration with the TMC government’s handling of several issues, including the RG Kar Hospital incident. He expected swift action from the state leadership, particularly in addressing corruption among doctors and resolving the tensions with junior doctors, but was disappointed with the delayed response. In his resignation letter, Sircar criticized the party's tolerance of a "favoured few" and the unchecked corruption within its ranks. He noted the widespread public dissatisfaction following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Hospital, which triggered protests across Bengal. He described this as a reflection of the public's growing distrust in the TMC government. Despite his attempts to raise concerns about corruption within the party, Sircar said he was met with resistance from senior leaders and lamented his inability to communicate privately with Mamata Banerjee for several months. He warned that unless the party addresses these issues, communal forces might gain a foothold in Bengal. Sircar emphasized that his fight against corruption, communalism, and authoritarianism remains unwavering. In his parting advice, he urged the party to adopt a non-confrontational approach and prioritize justice, warning that political inaction could lead to further unrest. Concluding his letter, Sircar announced his intention to resign formally from the Rajya Sabha and disassociate himself from politics entirely.
