Parliamentarian expresses concern over rising obscenity, decline in societal values, on social media
Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav has strongly criticized Instagram Reels for promoting indecency and violence. Speaking during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Yadav condemned those using the platform to spread explicit content, asserting that social media has contributed to a decline in societal values, particularly among the youth.
Yadav expressed his concerns, stating, "In our time, students were taught English proverbs like 'Wealth is lost, nothing is lost; Health is lost, something is lost; Character is lost, everything is lost.' It pains me to see that some channels and platforms, particularly Instagram Reels, are promoting vulgarity and violence."
He elaborated, "The youth are spending around three hours daily on such platforms, exposing themselves to inappropriate and vulgar content. This is leading to numerous incidents, such as violent crimes and thefts, which we read about in the newspapers."
Yadav noted that social media has disrupted traditional family interactions, with members now absorbed in their phones rather than engaging with each other. He highlighted the negative impact of online content on relationships and family dynamics, citing a rise in incidents of violence and crime attributed to social media use.
He concluded by emphasizing the need for action to address these issues, warning that if left unchecked, the influence of such platforms could further erode societal values and civility.
