Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu Secure Silver and Bronze in Men's High Jump
India's Sharad Kumar claimed the silver medal, while Mariyappan Thangavelu secured the bronze in the Men's High Jump - T63 Final on Tuesday, September 3. Shailesh Kumar, another Indian contender, finished just shy of the podium in 4th place.
Sharad Kumar achieved a remarkable jump of 1.88 meters, setting a new Paralympic record in the T42 category, surpassing the previous mark held by Mariyappan Thangavelu from the Tokyo Games. Despite his impressive past performance, Mariyappan had to settle for bronze this time with a best jump of 1.85 meters. Shailesh Kumar also reached 1.85 meters, a personal best, but missed out on a medal as he cleared the height on his second attempt.
The competition began with all three Indian athletes missing their first attempt at 1.67 meters. Mariyappan and Sharad then opted to skip the next height of 1.72 meters, while Shailesh successfully cleared it on his second try. As the bar was raised, all three competitors easily cleared 1.77 and 1.81 meters.
Mariyappan cleared 1.85 meters on his first attempt, while the rest of the field required multiple tries. However, USA's Ezra Frech soon emerged as a strong competitor, setting a new Paralympic record for the T63 category with a 1.88-meter jump. Sharad matched this height, while Mariyappan and Shailesh could not.
The final battle was between Sharad and Frech, with the American clearing 1.91 and 1.94 meters with ease, aiming to break his own world record set in July 2024. Despite Sharad's best efforts, he couldn't surpass Frech and had to settle for silver. Frech attempted to clear 1.98 meters but ultimately won with his best jump of 1.94 meters.
