Paris Olympic 2024, Wrestler Vinesh Phogat makes history, enters final

Vinesh Phogat

Vinesh Phogat has achieved an unprecedented milestone for Indian women's wrestling by becoming the first female wrestler from India to reach an Olympic final. She secured her spot in the gold medal match after defeating Yusneylys Guzmán 5-0 in the semifinal and will compete for the gold on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Phogat caused a major upset by tactically defeating the reigning champion, Yui Susaki, in the first round. She then followed up with a hard-fought victory in the quarterfinals, advancing to the semifinals of the 50kg category. Phogat's triumph over Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba with a score of 5-0 at the Paris Olympics 2024 marked a historic achievement as she became the first Indian woman to reach the wrestling final at the Olympics.

Phogat will face USA's Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the final on Wednesday. Her journey to the final included a stunning upset over the world no. 1 and defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the Round of 16, and a narrow victory against Ukraine's Oksana Livach in the quarterfinals. By ending Susaki's unbeaten run and outclassing Livach, Phogat guaranteed herself at least a silver medal, which is India's best result at the Paris Olympics.
