Paris Olympic 2024, Handed one-match ban, Amit Rohidas to miss India's SemiFinal

Indian men's hockey team player Amit Rohidas has been handed a one-match ban following a red card during the Paris Olympics 2024 quarterfinal match against Great Britain on Sunday. Consequently, Rohidas will miss India's semifinal match on Tuesday.

The incident occurred during the second quarter when Rohidas, while dribbling in the midfield, accidentally struck a rival player with his stick, prompting the on-field umpire to issue a red card. Despite being down to 10 men for the majority of the match, India triumphed in a shootout, with PR Sreejesh delivering an outstanding performance.

Hockey India has officially raised concerns about the quality of umpiring and decision-making, highlighting several key issues:

  1. Inconsistent video umpire reviews, particularly regarding the red card decision for an Indian player, undermining trust in the video review system.
  2. Coaching of a goalkeeper from behind the goalpost during the shoot-out.
  3. Use of a video tablet by a goalkeeper during the shoot-out.

"These incidents have undermined confidence in the officiating process among players, coaches, and fans. Hockey India calls for a thorough review of these matters to uphold the integrity of the sport and ensure fair play in future matches," the official statement from Hockey India read.

India's defender and first rusher Amit Rohidas will be unavailable for the team’s semifinal against Germany on Tuesday (August 6). Rohidas received a red card for dangerously lifting his stick intentionally during the quarterfinal against Great Britain. India secured the win in a shoot-out after a 1-1 tie. Rohidas was sent off in the 17th minute, forcing India to play the remaining 43 minutes with one less player. Now, India will have a reduced squad of 15 players for the semifinal against Germany.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced the one-match suspension for Amit Rohidas after the red card incident in the quarterfinal match against Great Britain on Saturday. "Amit (player No.30 of India) was suspended for one (1) match for a breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during match no. M32 India v Great Britain on 4th August, 2024,” stated the FIH.
