Pakistani film release in India, MNS chief warns of potential repercussions, know more
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has firmly opposed the release of the Pakistani film "The Legend of Maula Jatt" in Maharashtra, warning theater owners of potential repercussions if they proceed with screenings. With assembly elections approaching, Thackeray stated that his party would not permit the film, featuring Fawad Khan, to be shown in the state.
In a post on social media platform X, Thackeray expressed skepticism about the notion that art knows no borders, specifically criticizing films with Pakistani actors. “Why are films featuring Pakistani actors allowed in India? The MNS will not allow this film to be released in Maharashtra under any circumstances,” he asserted, urging theater owners to heed his warning.
Thackeray also called on state governments across India to prohibit the film's release, arguing that its timing, just before the Navratri festival, could incite social unrest. "I want to prevent any conflict during the festive season. The Chief Minister, Home Minister, and Director General of Police should share this sentiment," he remarked.
As "The Legend of Maula Jatt" prepares for its Indian release on October 2, Thackeray's opposition underscores ongoing tensions regarding cultural exchanges with Pakistan. He maintained that such films should not be screened, citing the strained relations between the two countries.
The film, which is the first Pakistani movie to be released in Indian theaters in over a decade, has generated considerable buzz, particularly due to the popularity of its stars, Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan. However, MNS Cinema Wing president Ameya Khopkar echoed Thackeray's stance, urging widespread protests against the film's release and warning that any cinemas attempting to show it would face consequences.
Thackeray concluded by emphasizing the need for vigilance among theater owners, recalling past actions taken by the MNS to block similar film releases. He stated, “Everyone remembers what MNS has done before. We do not want any conflict during Navratri, but we will not hesitate to act if this film is screened in Maharashtra.”
