OYO Implements New Check-In Policy: Unmarried Couples Require Proof of Relationship

Travel booking platform OYO has introduced a revised check-in policy at its partner hotels, starting in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, effective this year.
Under the new guidelines, unmarried couples will need to provide valid proof of their relationship at the time of check-in, even for online bookings.
New Policy Details
Proof of Relationship: All couples, including those who book online, must present documentation validating their relationship.
Discretion to Decline Bookings: Partner hotels have the authority to decline bookings based on local cultural and social sensibilities. Implementation in Meerut Meerut has been chosen as the pilot city for this policy following feedback from local civil society groups and residents.
OYO has instructed its partner hotels in the city to immediately adopt the new guidelines. The policy may be expanded to other cities depending on feedback and ground realities.
Feedback from Civil Society and Residents
According to OYO, the policy addresses requests from civil society groups, particularly in Meerut, and petitions from other cities, urging stricter regulations regarding unmarried couples at hotels.
Pawas Sharma, Region Head, OYO North India, stated: “OYO is committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices. While respecting individual freedoms, we must also align with the concerns of law enforcement and civil society in micro-markets. We will periodically review this policy and its impact.”
Enhancing Brand Image and Customer Trust
OYO clarified that the initiative is part of a broader effort to transform perceptions and position itself as a safe and family-friendly hospitality brand.
The policy aims to encourage longer stays, repeat bookings, and foster trust among its diverse clientele, including families, solo travelers, students, business professionals, and religious visitors.
Pan-India Safe Hospitality
Initiatives In addition to the new policy, OYO has launched nationwide efforts to ensure safe hospitality:
Hosting joint seminars with police and hotel partners on safe hospitality practices.
Blacklisting hotels reported for promoting immoral activities.
Taking action against unauthorized hotels using OYO branding.
Legal and Social Context
While there is no law in India prohibiting unmarried couples from staying in hotels, individual hotel owners and managers retain discretion in allowing such bookings. OYO’s new policy reflects its response to local cultural dynamics and feedback from stakeholders.
The move has sparked a mixed response, with some viewing it as necessary for fostering safety and trust, while others see it as a potential infringement on personal freedoms. As OYO continues to monitor feedback, further expansions of the policy remain a possibility.
