Over ₹800 Omelette Sparks Social Media Uproar, Know More

Omelette

New Delhi – A viral post on social media has sparked a heated debate over the price of an omelette costing ₹800 plus 18% GST at a luxury hotel.

The discussion, ignited by investor Kiran Rajput’s social media post, has once again raised concerns over the exorbitant pricing of food and beverages at high-end hotels and restaurants.

₹800 for an Omelette? The Debate Begins

Kiran Rajput took to social media to share an image of a bill, questioning why a simple plain omelette, which costs no more than ₹25 elsewhere, is being sold at an astronomical ₹800 + 18% GST at a star hotel. His post quickly gained traction, with users offering diverse opinions on the pricing strategies of luxury establishments.

Rajput wrote, "Can anyone explain why a plain omelette costs ₹800 + 18% GST in a star hotel? Its cost shouldn’t be more than ₹25. This is a 96.87% profit margin!"

Social Media Reacts: "You’re Paying for the Experience, Not Just the Food" The post drew mixed reactions, with some criticizing the inflated pricing, while others justified the cost as part of a luxury experience.

One user countered Rajput’s argument, stating, "You wouldn’t take photos or post on Facebook about an omelette that costs ₹25. You won’t even tell your friends about it. A person selling a ₹25 omelette doesn’t have 100 staff members to serve you, nor does he offer a swimming pool to relax in after your meal. So no, it’s not a 96% margin, it’s the cost of the experience."

Another user echoed a similar sentiment, saying, "You’re not just paying for an omelette, sir. You’re paying for social status and a premium experience. This is not just a meal; it’s a lifestyle choice."

The Economics of Luxury Dining

Many users also pointed out that pricing is dictated by market demand, not production costs. One user wrote, "The price exists because people are willing to pay for it. Price is determined by willingness to pay, not cost—Sales 101."

Others emphasized how luxury hotels and restaurants operate within a different economic model. They argued that higher costs cover premium service, ambiance, and hospitality.

The Tax Factor: Why Is It So Expensive?

Some users highlighted that the taxation structure also plays a significant role in high menu prices at luxury hotels. A user explained, "Hotel restaurants fall under the service category, which attracts higher GST. Earlier, there was a 6% service tax and an additional luxury tax by state governments. Now, five-star hotels are taxed at 28% GST, significantly increasing the final bill amount."
