Ohio Makes Diwali a School Holiday: Historic Victory for Hindu Students

Diwali

In a groundbreaking development, Ohio has officially recognized Diwali as a school holiday, thanks to a new law set to take effect in 2025.

Niraj Antani, Ohio’s first Hindu State Senator and former State Representative, proudly announced the passage of House Bill 214 (HB 214), which he co-sponsored. The law will allow Hindu students across Ohio to take Diwali off as a holiday, marking a historic win for the state’s Hindu community.

"I am incredibly excited to announce that, starting in 2025, every Hindu student in Ohio will have the opportunity to take school off for Diwali, a major cultural and religious celebration for millions of Hindus worldwide," said Antani. "This is an incredible victory for Hindus in Ohio and represents a significant step towards greater inclusion and recognition of religious diversity in our education system."

Expanding Religious Recognition in Schools

HB 214 does more than just recognize Diwali. The new law also allows Hindu students to take off two additional religious holidays, offering greater flexibility for students to observe their major religious festivals without academic disruption. This makes Ohio’s policy one of the most progressive in the nation for accommodating religious observances in schools.

"The passage of this law makes Ohio a leader in religious accommodation, providing Hindu students the ability to celebrate their major holidays without the need to miss school or fall behind academically," said Antani. "This is a strong and much-needed policy change that acknowledges and celebrates the cultural diversity of our state."

A Milestone for Religious Inclusivity This landmark decision has been hailed as a significant step forward in fostering inclusivity and understanding of different religious practices in public life.

The law underscores Ohio's commitment to respecting and supporting its diverse communities, ensuring that students from all backgrounds can practice their faiths while also receiving a quality education. For many Hindu families in Ohio, this victory represents long-awaited recognition of their cultural and religious significance.

The change is expected to have a profound impact on Hindu students, allowing them to fully engage in their religious observances while maintaining their educational commitments. As the first Hindu State Senator in Ohio’s history, Niraj Antani’s leadership has played a key role in securing this historic policy change, marking a momentous milestone for both the state and the Hindu community.
