Odisha: BJP Leaders Killed in Collision with Dumper; Probe Underway for Possible Intentional Attack

Sambalpur, Odisha – January 5, 2025 – Two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders were tragically killed in a suspected intentional collision with a dumper on National Highway 53 in Odisha's Sambalpur district early Sunday morning.
Authorities have launched an investigation after eyewitnesses raised concerns that the incident may have been a deliberate attack.
The deceased have been identified as Debendra Nayak, the BJP's Goshala mandal president, and Muralidhar Chhuria, a former village head (Sarpanch).
Both men were reportedly close allies of senior BJP leader Nauri Naik.
The Incident
The accident occurred around 1:30 AM in the Burla police station area when the victims were traveling in a car with four others. The group was returning to their village in Kardola after a trip to Bhubaneswar.
As they were driving along National Highway 53, their car was reportedly hit from behind by a dumper. The impact led to a fatal collision, and despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Nayak and Chhuria were declared dead.
The other four individuals in the car suffered injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. One of the injured, Suresh Chanda, provided a detailed account of the events, casting doubt on the accidental nature of the crash.
Eyewitness Claims of Intentional Collision
According to Chanda, the dumper did not just hit the car once, but struck it twice from behind. In an attempt to evade further danger, the victims decided to divert onto a rural road near Kantapalli Square, but Chanda claims the dumper continued to chase them, ramming the vehicle again, causing it to overturn.
Chanda strongly suspected that the collision was not a mere accident. "It is highly unusual for a vehicle to hit another three times from behind. Such a thing cannot happen by mistake," he said, fueling the theory of an intentional attack.
Investigation Underway
The incident has raised suspicions of foul play. Former MLA Nauri Naik, who visited the injured at the hospital, also expressed concerns that the crash was deliberate.
He supported Chanda's claims, stating that the car had been deliberately rammed multiple times. In response to the growing allegations, Sambalpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo confirmed that the dumper involved in the collision had been seized and its driver taken into custody for questioning.
"We are investigating all aspects of the incident, including the possibility that this was a targeted attack, as alleged by the victims' families," Bhamoo stated. The police have not ruled out any potential motives for a premeditated attack, and investigations are ongoing.
Authorities are considering all angles, including possible political or personal motives behind the incident. As the investigation progresses, the deaths of the two BJP leaders have shocked the local community, and calls for justice are growing louder.
