MVA calls off 'Maharashtra Bandh', after Bombay High Court ruling

Uddhav Thackeray announces cancellation of Maharashtra Bandh following Bombay High Court ruling.

Maharashtra

Following a Bombay High Court ruling, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray announced the cancellation of the 'Maharashtra Bandh' originally planned for August 24. The court's decision, which prohibits political parties and individuals from organizing a Maharashtra Bandh, prompted Thackeray to make the announcement just hours after the ruling.

While expressing his respect for the court's order, Thackeray voiced his disagreement, emphasizing that this is not the appropriate time to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. He also urged the court to act with similar urgency in holding those responsible for the Badlapur incident accountable. Thackeray clarified that the bandh was intended as a protest against atrocities committed against women, without any political agenda, and denied any intentions of inciting violence.

In light of the court’s intervention, Thackeray stated that he would personally protest by sitting with a black band on his face at 11 AM on Saturday in front of the Shiv Sena Bhavan. The Opposition group Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which includes Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP), had initially called for the bandh to protest the Badlapur incident. Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar also appealed for the withdrawal of the bandh, acknowledging the court's ruling and its concern that such a protest could disrupt normal life, causing significant economic and service-related losses.
