Multiple opposition leaders including Priyanka Chaturvedi, Shashi Tharoor, Mahua Moitra, Asaduddin Owaisi and Raghav Chhadha have gone public saying that ”..Apple believes you are being targeted by state-sponsored attackers who are tying to remotely compromise iPhone associated with Apple ID..”
The message adds “..These attackers are likely targeting you individually because of who you are or what you do..”.
“…While its possible this is a false alarm, please take this warning seriously..”, the message read.
The opposition leaders except Asaduddin Owaisi all belong to larger opposition alliance against BJP led NDA. But there are other prominent ones also like Sameer Saran also have shared having gotten such an alert.
War of words has broken out after this revelation. On multiple opposition leaders alleging ‘hacking’ of their Apple devices, RJD MP Manoj Jha has reacted saying, “This is not an allegation… The message has already been received. What is happening? They want to see who is talking to whom…We have not heard anything from the government…”
“I’ve been an Apple user for the last 20 years, but never have I ever received a message warning about a state-sponsored attack. You can understand how flustered the central government that it is doing a surveillance on opposition leaders,” says Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on her X post claiming that she received official notification on her iPhone, suggesting that “state-sponsored attackers” could be targeting the device.
“I am not surprised at all. This is just a reflection of BJP’s frustration who are staring at a defeat in 2024 (Lok Sabha polls). INDIA alliance is going to emerge victorious. In this frustration, they are trying to silence us using CBI, ED and IT”, she added.
CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury also confirmed to the media, “I got an e-mail from Apple last night which mentioned that ‘state-sponsored’ surveillance is being done and your phone and all the systems are being hacked and tackling with this is difficult…Privacy is the right of every citizen, according to our Constitution…The Centre needs to give a clarification on why is this being done…”.
