Uttarakhand police have apprehended five individuals accused of gang-raping a minor girl inside a parked private bus at the Dehradun inter-state bus terminus last week.

The victim, found with severe facial and neck injuries at the terminus on the morning of August 13, was initially too traumatized to provide details to the police. However, she later disclosed to a psychologist that she had been assaulted by five employees of the bus company.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh reported on Sunday that the arrested suspects include Dharmendra Kumar, 32, the bus driver, and Devendra Kumar, 52, the conductor, both from Haridwar. The other individuals involved are Ravi Kumar, 34, a bus driver from Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh; Rajpal Singh, 57, a bus stand cashier from Haridwar; and Rajesh Kumar Sonkar, 38, a cleaner from Dehradun.

“These employees transported the girl from Delhi to Dehradun and committed the assault within the bus, which has been seized,” Singh stated.

The incident has sparked criticism from opposition parties, who have expressed disbelief that such a heinous crime could occur in a supposedly secure and well-lit location frequented by numerous passengers. In response, Singh assured that the bus stand has adequate security measures.

Police Inspector K.K. Lunthi, who is leading the investigation, provided limited details but confirmed that the victim, originally from Moradabad, had traveled to Delhi before being brought to Dehradun. The local panchayat has verified her identity.

A Dehradun resident noted that the bus stand becomes unsettling at night, with many lights out and buses parked haphazardly, creating an environment where crimes can easily occur.

The police swiftly identified the accused through CCTV footage and have impounded the bus. The Dehradun Child Welfare Committee (CWC) had earlier discovered the girl alone at the bus terminal late on August 12 and subsequently placed her in the Bal Niketan government girls' home for her protection.
