Market Holiday: Stock Market Closed on November 20, 2024, Due to Maharashtra Elections
The Indian stock markets, including the BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) and NSE (National Stock Exchange), will remain closed on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, due to the Maharashtra Assembly Elections. While this is not a national holiday, markets in Mumbai will observe a special holiday as polling takes place across the state.
No Trading on Election Day
The closure applies to all trading activities, including equity, derivatives, and commodity markets. The holiday is in line with Maharashtra's declared public holiday for voting.
This follows a precedent where the stock market also remained closed on voting days during the Lok Sabha elections.
Three Holidays This Week
This week will see three non-trading days in the stock market:
- November 20, Wednesday: Holiday due to Maharashtra elections.
- November 23, Saturday: Weekly holiday.
- November 24, Sunday: Weekly holiday.
Upcoming December Holidays
In December 2024, the stock market will remain closed for 10 days, including:
- 4 Saturdays and 5 Sundays.
- December 25 (Christmas Day): Special holiday.
This means only 21 trading days will be available in December, marking a lighter trading month due to multiple closures.
Market Performance on Tuesday
Ahead of the holiday, the stock market witnessed a strong rally on Tuesday:
- Sensex surged by over 1,000 points during intraday trading.
- Nifty gained more than 300 points.
- The bullish trend added approximately ₹6 lakh crore to investors’ wealth, reflecting significant market optimism.
What’s Next?
While markets take a pause for elections, traders and investors will be gearing up for a busy session on Thursday, November 21. Market participants are advised to plan their trades accordingly, considering the upcoming closures and reduced trading days in December.
