A major disaster was narrowly averted in Kumedpur when five oil tankers from a freight train derailed early on August 9. The incident, which occurred in the Katihar railway division, led to a large crowd of locals gathering at the scene. Senior officials arrived to address the situation and resume operations.

The freight train, carrying oil tankers, derailed near Kumedpur station (Bengal), causing significant disruption. Fortunately, the incident did not result in any major accident, despite the potential danger due to the presence of oil in the tankers. No damage or casualties were reported.

The derailment caused a halt in operations for several hours, delaying trains on the NJP-Malda rail segment and leading to route changes for some trains. Railway officials, including ADRM Manoj Kumar Singh, promptly responded to the situation. The team reached the site by 12:15 PM and began efforts to restore rail services.

The incident occurred as the freight train was en route from Siliguri to Katihar and happened near the North Cabin of Kumedpur, located on the Bihar-West Bengal border. The disruption also affected the Vande Bharat train, which was scheduled to pass through this line. Consequently, around half a dozen trains were temporarily halted at various stations, including Aluabari, Kishanganj, and Sudhani Samshi, before being diverted to alternative routes.
