In a tragic accident in Yazd, Iran, at least 35 Pakistani pilgrims have lost their lives and 18 others have been injured after a bus overturned at a checkpoint. The incident occurred on Tuesday night in the central Iranian province of Yazd, according to Mohammad Ali Malekzadeh, a local emergency official cited by the IRNA news agency. The pilgrims were en route to Iraq to observe Arbaeen, marking the 40th day following the death of a Shiite saint from the 7th century.

The crisis management director general of Yazd province reported that 11 women and 17 men were among those who died. Seven of the injured are in critical condition, while six others have been discharged from the hospital. Pakistan's consular services in Iran have been asked to assist with the aftermath of the accident.

Currently, millions of Shi'ite Muslims are participating in the Arbaeen pilgrimage in Iraq's Karbala Governorate. According to Maulana Qamar Abbas Naqvi from Larkana's peace committee, 30 people died at the scene, with five more succumbing to their injuries in the hospital. However, Iran's Mehr News Agency reported 28 fatalities, with emergency measures imposed in local hospitals to care for the injured.

The bus, which was carrying 53 passengers, overturned and caught fire near the Taftan-Dehshir checkpoint. Rescue teams quickly arrived to transport the victims and the injured to nearby hospitals. Initial reports indicate that the bus had 14 women among the passengers, with 10 from Khairpur and six from Kashmore.

Syed Athar Shamsi, the leader of the convoy departing from Larkana for Arbaeen, mentioned that the group traveled in two buses. The bus involved in the accident was ahead, while the other bus fell behind due to documentation issues. Maulana Shah Murad Sharifi, a Qom seminary student from Larkana, noted that most passengers in the wrecked bus are in critical condition and receiving treatment. He also reported that brake failure might have been a contributing factor to the accident.
