Maharashtra Government Formation: BJP to Finalize Leadership as Devendra Fadnavis Poised for Chief Minister Post, Shinde's son Likely to Be Deputy

Maharashtra

The political landscape in Maharashtra is set to witness a new chapter as the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance prepares to form the government after a sweeping victory in the state assembly elections. With the BJP emerging as the single largest party, securing 132 of the 288 seats, the alliance has garnered a clear majority, paving the way for a stable administration.

Key Developments Ahead of Government Formation

BJP Legislature Party Meeting on December 4

The BJP has called a crucial meeting of its legislature party on December 4 in Mumbai to elect its leader. All BJP MLAs have been instructed to be present by Tuesday afternoon. Following the election of the leader, the Mahayuti coalition, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena (led by Eknath Shinde), and NCP (led by Ajit Pawar), will visit Raj Bhavan to stake its claim to form the government.

Devendra Fadnavis Likely to Return as Chief Minister

Sources indicate that Devendra Fadnavis, a seasoned leader and former Chief Minister, is the frontrunner for the top post. His name is expected to be officially announced during the legislature party meeting. The decision underscores BJP’s strategy to leverage Fadnavis's experience and leadership.

Swearing-In Ceremony Scheduled for December 5

The new Mahayuti government will take the oath of office on the evening of December 5 at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the grand event, highlighting the significance of this political milestone.

Alliance Dynamics and Internal Discussions

Shiv Sena’s Role in the Alliance Outgoing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who was initially considered a contender for the top position, has publicly supported BJP’s decision regarding the Chief Minister post. Dismissing rumors of discontent, Shinde reiterated his commitment to the alliance and its collective decision-making process.

NCP’s Inclusion Sparks Debate While the Mahayuti’s victory was comprehensive, tensions over the inclusion of Ajit Pawar’s NCP in the coalition have surfaced. Some BJP and Shiv Sena leaders believe the alliance could have secured an even larger mandate without the NCP. Shiv Sena leader Gulabrao Patil claimed the party could have won 90-100 seats if contested independently. However, NCP spokesperson Amol Mitkari dismissed such remarks, asserting the importance of unity within the coalition.

Election Recap and Results

The Maharashtra Assembly elections, held on November 20, 2024, resulted in a landslide victory for the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.

BJP: 132 seats

Shiv Sena: 57 seats

NCP: 41 seats

The election results, declared on November 23, solidified BJP’s position as the dominant political force in the state.

What Lies Ahead?

As Devendra Fadnavis gears up to take the oath as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, the Mahayuti government faces the dual challenge of delivering on its electoral promises and managing internal dynamics within the alliance. The swearing-in ceremony on December 5 is expected to mark the beginning of a new era in Maharashtra politics.
