After weeks of deliberations, the Maharashtra government announced its cabinet portfolios on Saturday. The distribution followed extensive negotiations within the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP Mahayuti alliance, which secured a resounding victory in the assembly elections.

Key Portfolio Allocations

Devendra Fadnavis (Chief Minister): Retained the Home Ministry, along with Law & Judiciary, General Administration, and Information & Publicity departments.

Eknath Shinde (Deputy Chief Minister): Assigned Urban Development, Housing, and Public Works (Public Enterprises) portfolios.

Ajit Pawar (Deputy Chief Minister): Took charge of Finance & Planning and State Excise.

Dadaji Bhuse (Shiv Sena): School Education Uday Samant (Shiv Sena): Industries and Marathi Language

Prakash Abitkar (Shiv Sena): Health Chandrashekhar Bawankule (BJP): Revenue

Girish Mahajan (BJP): Water Resources (Vidarbha, Tapi, Konkan Development Corporation) and Disaster Management

Pankaja Munde (BJP): Environment, Climate Change, and Animal Husbandry

Highlights of the Process

The Mahayuti alliance, comprising BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, saw intense negotiations over key ministries. The Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, initially sought the Home Ministry but eventually accepted Urban Development. Meanwhile, the NCP pushed for significant portfolios like Finance, Housing, and Industries.

Legislative Updates

The announcement came after the winter session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, which concluded on December 21 in Nagpur. During the six-day session, issues such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and violence in Parbhani were debated. The session also passed 13 out of 15 reintroduced bills, with one referred to a joint committee.

Upcoming Budget Session

The budget session of the Maharashtra legislature is scheduled to begin on March 3 in Mumbai. The newly allocated portfolios are expected to influence governance strategies as ministers settle into their roles.

The Mahayuti alliance's portfolio allocation aims to balance power among its partners while focusing on key areas like urban development, finance, and education to drive Maharashtra’s growth agenda.
