Maha Vikas Aghadi Tensions Rise as Uddhav Thackeray's Sena Declares Candidates for Contested Seats

Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) declares candidates for disputed Versova and Ghatkopar West seats, intensifying friction within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition ahead of Maharashtra Assembly elections

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, an alliance between Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), the Congress, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP, is encountering internal friction as Uddhav’s Shiv Sena announced candidates for the disputed Versova and Ghatkopar West assembly seats in Mumbai. On Saturday, Shiv Sena (UBT) declared Haroon Khan for Versova and Sanjay Bhalerao for Ghatkopar West, despite Congress and NCP also laying claims to these constituencies in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections.

The Uddhav-led Sena further named candidates for other key seats: Vinod Ghosalkar, father of the late Sena leader Abhishek Ghosalkar, for Dahisar; Bhairulal Jain for Malabar Hill; sitting MLA Rutuja Latke from Andheri East; and Pravin Morazkar from Kurla. These announcements add a layer of complexity to MVA's internal seat-sharing arrangements and raise concerns about potential discord.

Mumbai, with 36 assembly segments, will be a central battleground on November 20, when voting takes place for all 288 Maharashtra Assembly seats. Results will be announced on November 23. The election presents a bipolar contest, with the ruling Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction—aiming to retain power against the opposition MVA alliance.
