UP CM Yogi Adityanath Orders Judicial Probe and Stringent Crowd Control Measures

Prayagraj, January 30, 2025 – In a tragic incident at the Maha Kumbh Mela, 30 devotees lost their lives and 60 others were injured in a pre-dawn stampede at the Sangam area on Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious bathing days of the festival.

The tragedy occurred as millions of devotees gathered to take a holy dip, leading to an overwhelming surge in the crowd.

Yogi Adityanath Takes Swift Action

Following the unfortunate incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath convened an emergency late-night meeting with senior police officers and district officials from Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mirzapur, Basti, Jaunpur, Chitrakoot, Banda, Ambedkarnagar, Pratapgarh, Sant Kabir Nagar, Bhadohi, Rae Bareli, and Gorakhpur. The CM announced a judicial probe into the incident and issued a series of strict crowd management and traffic control measures to ensure the safety of devotees and prevent future mishaps.

Key Measures Implemented After the Stampede

1️⃣ No-Vehicle Zone Declared: The entire Maha Kumbh area has been declared a no-vehicle zone. Entry of all types of vehicles has been banned to facilitate smooth movement of devotees.

2️⃣ VVIP Passes Canceled: Special passes allowing vehicular entry have been revoked to prevent unnecessary congestion. No vehicle, including those with VIP passes, will be allowed in the Kumbh area.

3️⃣ One-Way Traffic System: Roads leading to the Sangam area have been converted into one-way routes to prevent overcrowding and bottlenecks.

4️⃣ Ban on Four-Wheelers Until February 4: Vehicles coming from districts adjoining Prayagraj are being stopped at district borders, and a strict ban on four-wheelers entering the city is in place until February 4.

5️⃣ Increased Patrolling & Crowd Management: Police officers have been instructed to increase security patrols in key areas and ensure smooth traffic flow on major routes including Ayodhya-Prayagraj, Kanpur-Prayagraj, Fatehpur-Prayagraj, Lucknow-Pratapgarh-Prayagraj, and Varanasi-Prayagraj.

6️⃣ Holding Areas & Essential Facilities: Special holding areas have been set up at district borders to regulate the influx of devotees. Food and drinking water facilities have been arranged at these points.

7️⃣ Special Transport Arrangements: Given the mass departure of devotees from Prayagraj, additional special trains and buses have been deployed to ease the travel rush.

Judicial Inquiry Ordered

CM Yogi Adityanath, visibly emotional while addressing the media, called the incident a learning lesson for future event management. He has directed a judicial investigation into the tragedy.

🔹 Retired Justice Harsh Kumar will head the judicial commission.

🔹 Former DGP VK Gupta and retired IAS officer DK Singh will be part of the probe team.

Upcoming Amrit Snan on February 3: Tightened Security

With the Basant Panchami ‘Amrit Snan’ scheduled for February 3, CM Adityanath has directed the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to review security arrangements at the Mela area and ensure such incidents are not repeated.

Authorities Urge Cooperation

Officials have appealed to devotees to cooperate with the administration, follow designated routes, and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent further mishaps. The Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering, continues to attract millions, but with these stringent measures in place, authorities aim to ensure a safer and more organized experience for devotees.
