India’s Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has confirmed that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla held bilateral discussions with the Vice President of the European Parliament Nicola Beer but the occasion was also used to underline India’s sovereignty and protest was lodged against bringing proposal in European Parliament on India’s internal issues.
He insisted during the meeting that every nation and Parliament is sovereign and that their internal issues should not be discussed by others.
It is not known in what context this protest was lodged but it need be recalled that the European Parliament very recently deliberated on the issue of Manipur violence.
Lok Sabha Speaker held a bilateral meeting with Vice President of European Parliament Nicola Beer on the sidelines of the P20 Summit on 14 October 2023.
He also stressed on importance of promoting inter-parliamentary visits and close cooperation between Indian, European MPs. Besides discussing the several other issues of mutual interests, he also invited her to witness festival of democracy during next general elections, to happen in a couple of months time.
