Linda McMahon: From Wrestling CEO to Education Secretary
Linda McMahon, co-founder of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and a former Small Business Administration (SBA) head, has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump as Secretary of Education. Known for her journey from the high-energy world of wrestling to the political arena, McMahon’s career trajectory has drawn fresh attention amidst ongoing controversies surrounding WWE.
From Wrestling Ring to Political Powerhouse
McMahon co-founded WWE alongside her husband, Vince McMahon, building the company into a cultural phenomenon. While her husband played a dramatic, often controversial role in WWE’s televised narratives, Linda maintained a polished, business-oriented persona. Occasionally appearing in WWE’s scripted storylines, she famously participated in dramatic segments, including a memorable scene where she kicked Vince during a staged affair.
In 2009, McMahon stepped away from WWE to focus on her political ambitions. She ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut in 2010 and 2012 but remained a prominent figure in Republican circles. She later served as the SBA Administrator under Trump’s first administration, overseeing federal initiatives to support small businesses.
A New Role in Education
Trump’s nomination of McMahon as Education Secretary aligns with his commitment to scaling back federal oversight in education and returning control to states. In his statement, Trump said:
“We will send Education BACK TO THE STATES, and Linda will spearhead that effort.”
As Education Secretary, McMahon would oversee federal student aid programs, public school funding, and data collection on education across the U.S. Trump’s plan emphasizes reducing the department's size and shifting its responsibilities to state governments.
Controversies Surrounding WWE
Even as McMahon steps into this new role, allegations against WWE have resurfaced. A lawsuit filed against both Linda and Vince McMahon accuses the organization of "systemic and pervasive abuse" of underage individuals. Vince McMahon separately faces allegations of sexual misconduct and trafficking, casting a shadow over Linda’s nomination.
Trump and McMahon: A Longstanding Relationship
Linda McMahon has been a key figure in Trump’s orbit for years. She played a significant role in his transition team in 2016 and chaired the America First Policy Institute, a think tank promoting Trump’s agenda. Their connection dates back to WWE’s WrestleMania in 2007, where Trump famously shaved Vince McMahon’s head as part of a staged feud.
