Large Asteroid Approaching Earth: Could Pose Existential Threat, ISRO Monitoring Movement Closely

Asteroid Apophis, larger than India's INS Vikramaditya and Narendra Modi Stadium, is approaching Earth on April 13, 2029. ISRO's NETRA is closely monitoring the asteroid, with Dr. S. Somanath highlighting the serious risks of a potential collision.

Asteroid Apophis, named after the Egyptian deity of chaos, is drawing significant attention due to its massive size and its close approach to Earth. Larger than India's largest aircraft carrier, the INS Vikramaditya, and the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Apophis is set to pass near Earth on April 13, 2029.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has integrated planetary defense into its responsibilities, focusing on protecting Earth from potential extraterrestrial threats. ISRO's Network for Space Objects Tracking and Analysis (NETRA) is actively monitoring Apophis to assess its trajectory and potential impact.

Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, emphasized the gravity of the situation: "A large asteroid strike poses a serious existential threat. ISRO is fully aware of this risk and is closely tracking Apophis. We have only one Earth, and India is committed to collaborating with international partners to address such threats."

Apophis, discovered in 2004, measures between 340 and 450 meters in diameter. While studies suggest that its 2029 pass will likely be a near miss rather than a collision, the asteroid's potential for "continental-scale devastation" if it were to impact Earth cannot be ignored. If an asteroid of this size were to strike, it could cause significant global disruption.

Dr. A.K. Anil Kumar, head of NETRA, warned of the severe consequences of a collision: "An impact could lead to local extinctions and global environmental disruption due to dust and debris affecting the atmosphere."

The last major asteroid impact in India occurred about 500,000 years ago, creating a crater lake in Lonar, Maharashtra. As the date approaches, global space agencies, including NASA and the European Space Agency, are preparing missions to study and potentially divert Apophis. ISRO's vigilance underscores the critical importance of planetary defense in safeguarding Earth from potential cosmic threats.
