Bengali Actors Stage Overnight Protest Demanding Justice for Kolkata Doctor's Rape-Murder

In a powerful display of solidarity, Bengali film industry icons, including Aparna Sen, Swastika Mukherjee, and Sudipta Chakraborty, joined thousands in an overnight protest in Kolkata, demanding justice for a doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month. The protest, marked by revolutionary songs like "Karar Oi Louho Kopat" and "We Shall Overcome," saw participants vowing to continue their demonstration until 4 am on Monday.

The protest, which began with a massive rally at College Square, culminated in sit-ins at key locations across the city, including Esplanade and Jawaharlal Nehru Road. The rallyists, part of the 'Maha Michhil' (mega rally), called for a swift investigation and the arrest of those responsible for the heinous crime.

Film director Birsa Dasgupta confirmed that a formal request had been sent to the administration, urging them to engage in talks with the protestors. The rally echoed the sentiments of a previous event, "Women Reclaim The Night," held on August 14, as the movement for justice gains momentum with each passing day. Two additional rallies were also held elsewhere in the city, organized by alumni of Ramakrishna Mission institutions and a well-known convent school, all demanding justice for the slain doctor.
