The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially taken over the investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a woman doctor at a state-run medical college in Kolkata. Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the agency swiftly completed all necessary formalities on Tuesday, ensuring the transfer of case documents from the state police.

A team of CBI officials, along with forensic experts and medical professionals, is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata early Wednesday morning to begin their investigation. The High Court had earlier instructed the state police to hand over the case diary to the CBI by 10 AM on Wednesday.

The tragic incident, involving a postgraduate trainee doctor, has sent shockwaves through the medical community across the country. Her body was discovered last Friday in a seminar hall at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where she was reportedly raped and murdered. A 33-year-old civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, was arrested on Saturday in connection with the crime.

The preliminary autopsy report revealed the horrific details of the crime, indicating that the victim had been sexually assaulted and murdered. Injuries were found on her eyes, mouth, private parts, neck, legs, and hands. The report further revealed that she was strangled to death, with her thyroid cartilage broken, and that the wounds on her body were consistent with sexual torture.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, with junior doctors across the region organizing protests and ceasing work to demand swift justice for the victim. This has significantly impacted patient care in several medical colleges, where junior doctors typically attend to the Out-Patient Departments.

The family of the 31-year-old victim has expressed their anguish over the incident, revealing that they were initially told she had died by suicide and were made to wait outside the hospital for three hours before being allowed to see her body. The postmortem report, which spans four pages, detailed the extent of her injuries and confirmed that she had been throttled and subjected to horrific sexual violence.
