Karnataka is moving forward with a policy that will grant women six days of paid menstrual leave per year, potentially benefiting thousands of employees. An 18-member committee has been formed to draft the "Right of Women to Menstrual Leave and Free Access to Menstrual Health Products" bill. If approved, Karnataka will join states like Bihar, Kerala, and Odisha in providing period leave.

Led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the Karnataka government is reviewing a proposal to implement this initiative for women in both public and private sectors. This follows a report from a panel set up to address the issue.

Labour Minister Santosh Lad shared that the committee recommended the provision of six days of paid menstrual leave annually, which is currently under review. Labour Secretary Mohammed Mohsin indicated that discussions will take place with relevant departments before the proposal is presented to the Legislature for approval.

The plan is to initially introduce this policy in the private sector, followed by government departments once it is formalized. Lad emphasized that this initiative supports the female workforce, acknowledging the significant life changes women experience.

He also mentioned that the paid leave will be flexible, allowing women to decide when to take time off. "It’s not just about being progressive. Women face various challenges, especially after marriage or childbirth, which must be considered," he noted.

If successful, Karnataka's initiative will align it with other states offering menstrual leave, further improving work-life balance by addressing the physical and emotional challenges women encounter during menstruation.
