Kangana Ranaut's Film "Emergency" Postponed Amid Controversy
Actor and Parliamentarian Kangana Ranaut's upcoming film "Emergency" has been postponed due to escalating controversy over its portrayal of the Sikh community. The film, which was initially set to release on September 6, has faced significant backlash, particularly in Punjab, leading to delays in receiving clearance from the Certification Board.
Sources indicate that the board has requested additional cuts to address concerns, stating that they will consider the sentiments of all communities involved.
The Shiromani Akali Dal had previously issued a legal notice to the Board, arguing that the film could "incite communal tensions" and misrepresent the Sikh community. The notice, dated August 27, claimed that the movie portrays Sikhs in a "negative and unjust light" and accused Ranaut of using the subject of the Emergency to target the Sikh community rather than making a genuine political or historical statement.
Kangana Ranaut, who is also a sitting MP from Mandi, remains hopeful that the film will be released within the next 10 days despite the challenges. In a video shared on her official X handle, she addressed the rumors surrounding the film's certification, stating that while it was initially cleared, the process has been halted due to multiple threats, including death threats directed at Censor Board members. Ranaut expressed her disappointment with the situation, emphasizing the pressure to remove key content from the film, such as the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the Punjab riots, which she finds deeply concerning.
