Kanda Express Brings Relief to Delhi: 1,341 Metric Tons of Onions Arrive from Nashik

Kanda Express delivers 1,341 metric tons of onions to Delhi, stabilizing prices and supporting both consumers and farmers

Kanda Express

Delhi residents can expect relief from soaring onion prices as the third "Kanda Express", carrying 1,341 metric tons of onions, arrived at Kishanganj Railway Station on Sunday. This special goods train, originating from Lasalgaon in Maharashtra's Nashik district, is part of the government's initiative to stabilize onion prices and ensure availability in high-demand cities.

Third Kanda Express Reaches Delhi

The first Kanda Express arrived in Delhi on October 20, followed by the second on November 14 with 1,333 metric tons of onions. This third shipment is expected to further stabilize onion prices in Delhi, which have been fluctuating between ₹55 and ₹80 per kilogram in the retail market. The government, through NCCF and NAFED, is selling onions at subsidized rates of ₹35 per kilogram at designated stalls.

Boost for Farmers and Co-Operatives

This initiative benefits not only consumers but also farmers in the Nashik region. The bulk transportation of perishable goods via rail has provided farmers with an efficient and cost-effective supply chain, increasing their revenue.

Rail transportation, through the "Shetkari Samruddhi" initiative, allows large-scale onion movement, ensuring better price stability in the market. Another train, loaded with 1,400 metric tons of onions, is already being prepared for dispatch from Nashik to Delhi.

Government's Strategic Move

The Consumer Affairs Ministry initiated the Kanda Express in October to meet high onion demand in cities like Delhi, Lucknow, and Guwahati. Initially, three goods trains were planned, but the initiative’s success led to an expansion of operations. Transporting onions via rail costs ₹34 lakh per train, compared to ₹75 lakh by road, significantly reducing expenses.

Impact on Hoarding and Black Marketing

The government’s efforts aim to curb black marketing and hoarding, which contribute to price hikes. By increasing the availability of onions in the market, the initiative puts pressure on hoarders to release their stock, bringing down prices further.

Affordable Onions for Consumers

With onions now available at government stalls for ₹35 per kilogram, the initiative is expected to alleviate the burden on households and discourage hoarding practices. The increased supply ensures affordability for consumers and reinforces the government’s commitment to price stability.

The Kanda Express continues to play a pivotal role in making onions accessible to consumers while supporting farmers and combating market manipulation. This strategic move is a win-win for all stakeholders involved.
